This Bakelite LW/MW/VHF two speaker set was introduced in 1955. It has 7 valves and has an interesting feature in that the sound is directed by Bakelite cones also to the side and it looks like a 4 speaker set. It has been recently repaired by Tim Pullin. I bought the set while I was stationed in Germany for about £3.

This is a 7 valve LW/MW/SW/VHF set from 1955 and an option was the remote control. The set has 4 speakers including an electrostatic tweeter. I purchased this set on eBay for £56 but it arrived damaged. However as I had another set for spares, Tim Pullin was able to use it to repair the set and the details are included under recent repairs. The set was made for the English market and has a 3pin DIN socket for Pickup of auxiliary devices (phono, tape, CD).

This is a 3 speaker, 7-valve LW/MW/SW/VHF set dating from 1956. It is a large set and weighs about 15 kilos. It has a Wunschklang (a graphic equalizer). I bought it on the German eBay site for about £18. I have not got round to restoring it, but other than the speaker fabric and an intermittent FM fault, it works OK. It has a 3 pin DIN input for Pickup.

This is a big LW/MW/SW/VHF 8 valve set that I paid about £100 on the Belgium eBay site. It is a very big set (26 x 17 x 10 inches) and weighs over 20 kilos. It has 4 speakers, including an electrostatic tweeter and has a Wunschklang (graphic equalizer). The set has recently been restored by Steve Ostler at Radiocraft. This is our dining room radio and it has a 3 pin DIN input for Pickup.

Boy 30

Wavebands - MW, VHF

Transistors - 2 transistors and 1 IC

Date - 1983

Status - In my collection

This was another Christmas 2003 gift from my partner, which he bought on eBay. The battery lid is broken and there are sellotape stains on the cabinet where it has been taped in place. The set is completely dead, so shouldn't be too difficult to repair.

Mike Izycky commented:

Just looking at your Grundig page and the query of the date of the 'Boy 30' - it makes its first appearance in the 1983-84 German catalogue.

This was another eBay purchase. I originally paid £30 for it, but when it arrived I found that the aerial is not the original type (the base section is fixed at the height shown and hits the handle). I discussed this with the seller and we agreed a £15 refund, making the price of the set £15, which is more reasonable.

I have now obtained another one with a worse cabinet but the correct aerial. This one sounds much better too, so I will be making one good one out of the two.

We took the second one on holiday with us in September 2004 as it is the best sounding VHF mains powered trannie I own, and it performed very well in our chalet in North Wales on Radio 2 for the week.

We had a couple of these sets at the boarding school I attended. This was opened in 1975 (I started the same year), so I had a nostalgic reason for wanting one.

The set is powered either by a PP9 battery or mains. The mains lead is fixed and tucks in a compartment in the bottom of the set. Unlike many sets, this one has just about enough room for a UK 13A mains plug. A switch on the back selects mains or battery operation.

A page from the 1974/75 Grundig catalogue detailing the set is shown here http://www.geocities.com/grundigradioboy/75parb5.htm and the specifications are shown here http://www.geocities.com/grundigradioboy/75radspecp3.htm.
